Adolf Hitler became Reich Chancellor 80 years ago

On 30 January 1933 Adolf Hitler was appointed as an adviser. Twelve years later, Europe became devastated, and millions died as a result of the Holocaust and the Second World War.

In November 1918, Adolf Hitler was released from the Pacific War Hospital. Not yet 30 years old, a frustrated soldier, unemployed, without education and views. After more than two decades, the corporal will begin to invade the world. About 60 million people will die in World War II, in an unprecedented genocide of almost European Jews extinguished.

"Power grab" for Hitler

Hitler's rise to absolute power began 80 years ago: On January 30, 1933, he became a student of bankrupt art from the Austrian city of Braunau and leader of the National Socialists Reich Chancellor in Berlin. History is a fateful day of German history.

"Now gentlemen, go ahead with God!" The head of the Reich, Paul von Hindenburg, decides after he was appointed Chancellor of the Reich at noon on the penultimate day of January 1933. After power poker for months, the 85-year-old Field Marshal of the First World War forced the head of the German Socialist Party, the German Workers' Party (NSDAP) To form a government.

At the same time, Hindenburg confirmed shortly before that he did not intend to bring Hitler, "Bohemian Special", to the government. NSDAP has long regarded Hitler as a bunch of fanatics. Their slogans hate Jews and communists, and propaganda against the "regime" at first hardly heard. In 1923, NSDAP tried in vain to drop Munich. In the 1928 elections it had received only 2.6 percent.

But the economic crisis and the fragile political constitution of the Weimar Republic are playing into the hands of the British. Unemployment rose in 1932 to 30 percent. The cabinet failed one by one. In 14 years of the first German Republic, 20 governments rotate. With a working class divided into social and communist democrats, an insecure middle class, and a class of nobility indulging in an authoritarian past, the late united nation is a Republic.

It was a mistake to think that it was only Hitler's attack that brought down the Weimar Republic, as the contemporary journalist and witness Sebastien Hafner wrote. "It was already falling when Hitler entered the scene very seriously."

Hitler's first big chance came in 1930. NSDAP in the Reichstag elections in September received 18.3 percent about 6.4 million votes. The state crisis is getting worse. In the street battles between Hitler thugs and communist fighter groups SA SA killed dozens of people. In light of the situation, Hindenburg rejects Prime Minister Heinrich Bruing (center) and appoints Franz von Baben as an adviser. The Westphalian landlord, along with industrial barons, bankers and senior farmers, seeks an anti-Bolshevik alliance. Nobody at first thought of Hitler as the prime minister of Germany's elite.

This will change soon. With 37.4 percent, NSDAP won more than twice as many votes in July 1932 as it did in 1930. But in November, Hitler and his followers got sick. In the new election, NSDAP has a lot of votes, and SA runs away from his followers. The Nazi leaders fear that they will miss the opportunity. It is time to seize power, as Joseph Goebbels, the head of Hitler's incitement, points out in his memoirs.

Meanwhile, General Kurt von Schleicher took over the government. Behind his back, Ben is now trying to get close to Hitler. "Hitler's Axis," is the motto of retrospective polemicist Alfred Hogenberg. The National Socialists will participate in an alliance with the German citizens and the Nazi organization Stahlhelm.

Completion of the "seizure of power"

Hitler hopes that the "rebellious elite" (Hafner) will be a constituency that can no longer stand on its own feet. But Hitler is still difficult: support from the National Socialists can only be obtained through his advisers. On January 28, Schleicher resigned - two days later Hitler became in power.

They wanted to put Hitler in the corner "to sneak in," explains Benn later this step - a Fehlkalkül. On the evening of 30 January, 20,000 men and members of the Stahlhelm family marched through the Brandenburg Gate and the government quarter. "It's almost a dream," Goebbels writes, "Wilhelmstrase is our king."

Hitler acts quickly but tries to maintain the appearance of legitimacy. Civil rights will be suspended in February, and the Reichstag will be removed in March, and the countries will be phased out in April. One day after the first of May, trade unions are banned, because persecution of the Jews is already in full swing. Communists and social democrats are arrested, artists and intellectuals are thrown into prison and led to exile.

With the death of Hindenburg in August 1934, Hitler also seized the office of the head of the Reich. A year and a half after January 30, 1933, Hitler strengthened his dictatorship. The road to absolute power is free. The rule of terrorism will end only after the war of millions of people killed and burned.
