30 things about Mars

1. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun; is also called the Red Planet because of its reddish soils, rich in iron oxide;

2. It is the furthest planet from the Sun, the average distance from it is 240 million kilometers;

3. Mars has about 10% of the Earth's weight and an equatorial circumference of 21,344 km, about 53% of Earth's (40,075 km);

4. The name of the planet comes from the bloody Roman god of war, Mars;

5. Mars has two natural satellites, Phobos and Deimos; these are rocky blocks of irregular shape, most likely asteroids;

6. Mars performs complete rotation on its own orbit in Earth-like time, 24.6 hours, but a complete rotation around the sun (one year) lasts for 687 days;

7. Being farther from the Sun than the Earth, the temperatures on Mars are lower; they fall between -153 degrees, at the poles, and 20 degrees at the equator;

8. Because it has an axial inclination very close to that of the Earth (25.19 Mars, 26.27 Earth), Mars has seasons, just like our planet;

9. The Martian atmosphere is very thin and is formed largely of carbon dioxide (96%);

10. On Mars is the highest mountain in the Solar System, Olympus Mons, with an altitude of 26,000 m and a surface similar to that of Germany;

11. Here is also the largest canyon of the Solar System, Valles Marineris; it has a length of about 4,000 km and a maximum depth of 7 km;

29. Peste 200.000 de oameni din peste 140 de tari au aplicat pentru obtinerea unui tichet cu un singur sens catre Marte. Proiectul Mars One, cu un buget de 4 miliarde de dolari, planuieste ca pana in 2023 sa transporte oameni pe Marte, in vederea stabilirii primei colonii umane;

30. NASA si ESA (Agentia Spatiala Europeana) vor colabora in viitor pentru o misiune cu personal uman catre Marte;
