Raqqa recaptured from IS, says US forces

Syrian democratic forces, supported by the United States, on Tuesday said that they completely repulsed Raqqa, the citadel of an Islamic state, reports the BBC. The SDF said that the battle in Raccoon ended in four months. SDF, the union of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters, raised the flag of the militia at the stadium of Rakka on Tuesday, reports Reuters. "The military operations in Raccoon are over, but now there are clearing operations to identify any sleeping cells that can be removed by mines," said AFF spokesman Talal Cello.

The Islamic state group seized Raccoon in early 2014 and made the city its headquarters. The militant group carried out executions and crucifixes to terrorize those citizens who opposed its rule. The SDF has been fighting the militants in Raccoon since June.

The Islamic state lost its Iraqi fortress in Mosul in July. The militant group captured Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, in June 2014. On October 17, 2016, Iraqi troops, supported by a coalition led by the United States, launched a major offensive to return Mosul. More than a million people were killed, thousands of civilians were displaced, and large parts of the city were destroyed in the last nine months of fighting in Iraq.
