10 Gbps broadband speed at home

For the ultra-fast but low-cost broadband connection At Home in the UK, the new receiver technology can provide dedicated data rates of more than 10,000 Mbit / s from the current 36 Mbps, researchers at University College London say. "Although 300 Mbps is available for some, the average speeds in the UK are currently 36 Mbps. By 2025, average speeds of 100 times faster will be required to meet the increased demands for bandwidth-intensive applications, such as high-definition video, online games and the Internet of things (IoT), "said lead researcher Sezer Erkilink.

"The future growth in the number of mobile devices combined with the promise of 5G to provide new services via smart devices means that we are likely to face bandwidth limitations, our new optical receiver technology will help to cope with this problem," he added in the published in the journal Nature Communications.

The receiver is used in optical access networks - connections connecting Internet subscribers with their service providers. The new receiver retains many of the advantages of coherent receivers, but is simpler, less expensive and less - it requires only a quarter of the detectors used in conventional receivers. Simplification was achieved by using coding technology for optical fiber access networks, which was originally designed to prevent signal fading in wireless communication. This approach has the additional cost savings of using the same optical fiber for both the upstream and downstream data streams.

"This simple receiver offers users a dedicated wavelength, so the user's speed remains constant no matter how many users are connected to the network at the same time, it can co-exist with the existing network infrastructure," Erkilink said. The receiver was tested on a network of dark fibers installed between Telehouse (east London), UCL (central London) and Powergate (western London). The team successfully sent data over 37.6 km and 108 km to eight users who were able to download or download at a speed of at least 10 Gb / s.
