In a new type of attack, cybercriminals infect computers with a bank trojan simply by trickling users to swim over a link embedded in a malicious PowerPoint file.
Attackers send malicious PowerPoint Show (PPS) or Open XML Slideshow (PPSX) to users via spam messages. These files are only opened in slideshow modes and are different from normal PowerPoint files (PPT and PPTX). When the target user downloads and opens this file, a slide that contains the next hyperlink is displayed.Mouseover_attack1
When the user hovers over this link, he tries to run a code that installs a robotic robot on the computer. Users with the Protected View feature (latest versions of Windows) receive a security warning (Figure 2) with Enable, Enable All, and Disable. If you click on 'Enable' or 'Enable all', the malicious code is executed, which terminates the computer with the Trojan. When you click Disable, the infection is no longer running.
Therefore, users with older versions of Windows or those who have no protected view enabled are the most vulnerable to this infection. Simply hovering on the link will infect your computer without warning.
Once installed, this bank Trojan can allow the attacker to remotely control the infected computer, access stored information, and perform a variety of other malicious activities.

    Safety measures you should take

    1) If you receive a security message, as above, it is safer not to proceed. You can always get a computer expert if you are not sure what to do.2) Never click links or download attachments that come with unexpected, unwanted or unknown e-mails.3) Install anti-virus software that provides protection layers. This helps to detect and block such threats at multiple levels. And the software is updated.4) Apply all recommended security patches to your operating system, such as Adobe, Java, Internet browser, etc.5) It is always a good security practice to keep a secure backup of your important data.6) Use strong and unique passwords for your online accounts.
