The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu has announced a "great summit" with the European Union. The summit's meeting should be discussed at the planned meeting with the EU leadership on the margins of the NATO summit on 24 and 25 May in Brussels, Cavusoglu said on Tuesday.

He did not comment on the summit. Ankara's relations with the EU are currently very tense. German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) announced on Saturday that EU President Donald Tusk will meet Erdogan with Turkish President Recep Tayyip at the NATO summit. He warned on Tuesday that Turkey would say "good-bye" to the EU should it not open up new chapters in the accession process. This is currently excluded by most EU countries.

Cavusoglu said Turkey had no problems with the European values, which were also theirs. "Nobody has the monopoly of democracy, human rights, freedoms, the only problem is the approach of the EU," said the Foreign Minister. The EU wants a return to the course of reform and an end to the repressions to continue the accession talks.

Relations with the EU fell to a low point in the election campaign for the controversial referendum on 16 April. Erdogan overcame Germany and the Netherlands with Nazi accusations after Turkish ministers canceled their performances there. He also described Europe as a "rotting continent" and brought a referendum on the process of accession.
