'Sup, you beautiful bastards? Hope you're having a fantastic Tuesday,
    0:03
welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show, and let's just dive into it.
    0:06
And the first thing I wanna talk about today is the potentially game-changing news
    0:10
that has hopefully come out by now, otherwise, oh my God, I just opened myself up to a lawsuit.
    0:14
YouTube is announcing today that they are launching a brand new service
    0:17
that makes it a competitor to the cable TV companies.
    0:20
They are launching a new service that allows you to watch live television,
    0:23
record it, and watch it whenever.
    0:25
It was originally being called YouTube Unplugged, it is now officially being announced as YouTube TV.
    0:30
Also, a quick side note, thank you to YouTube for actually contacting me
    0:33
before all of this news went live, and understanding that
    0:36
a lot of people get their news about YouTube from me.
    0:39
I appreciate that acknowledgement. Now get me in YouTube Rewind next year. Please.
    0:42
But, to the service at hand.
    0:43
When talking to YouTube, they said they're talking to the major US networks,
    0:46
the cable networks, premium channels, sport channels.
    0:48
So you can get your basic package, and then you can pick and choose the premium things
    0:52
that you actually wanna watch, you actually wanna pay for,
    0:54
and don't pay for the ones you don't actually use.
    0:55
They also added that they have select markets as far as local affiliate channels,
    0:59
and they plan to add more and more throughout the year.
    1:01
So obviously, this is a service that competes with cable TV,
    1:03
but it will also compete with Sling TV, DirectTV Now, PlayStation Vue.
    1:08
So the question then becomes, can they compete in this marketplace?
    1:10
What makes them different? What makes them worth it?
    1:12
Well, one of the biggest features they announced to me was limitless Cloud DVR.
    1:16
Let's say you have a favorite show, like Modern Family, Always Sunny in Philadelphia,
    1:19
The Mick is a fantastic new show.
    1:21
You subscribe to the show like you would with a YouTube channel,
    1:23
and boom! DVR just starts recording across all the networks.
    1:26
Then, whenever, wherever you are, as long as you have a connection, you can watch that show.
    1:30
And that's huge because that's not something all their competitors can say.
    1:33
DirectTV Now doesn't have Cloud DVR, Sling TV has their DVR in beta,
    1:37
and when it comes to PlayStation Vue, they do have DVR, but it only holds it for 28 days.
    1:41
Also, YouTube said that when you're watching these shows, you will have full functionality.
    1:45
So pause, rewind, fast forward, which doesn't sound like a feature,
    1:48
but if you use these services, you know it actually is,
    1:50
since DirectTV only allows you to pause, Sling TV lets you do it with some channels,
    1:53
and PlayStation Vue allows you to do it with all channels.
    1:55
Also, just like their competitors, there's no big contract. You pay month to month,
    1:59
if you don't like it anymore, you cancel it, you're done.
    2:01
That base price is being announced at $35 for six logins.
    2:04
To compare, DirectTV only allows two, Sling TV's been advertised as having one or three,
    2:08
    and PlayStation Vue allows five.
    2:10
The advantage there obviously goes to YouTube TV because that will allow TV streaming for the entire family.
    2:14
Or, TV for you and then also five of your cheap-ass friends.
    2:18
Or hell, maybe if you're in college, six college kids just pay for it all together,
    2:21
it comes in at under $6 a person.
    2:23
And then on top of all of that, they are uniquely positioned to integrate YouTube into this.
    2:28
And they talked about this in two separate scenarios. One's more interesting than the other.
    2:31
One, where they would have a shelf in their app that showed YouTube Red Originals.
    2:34
Okay, that's interesting, it makes sense for them, because they paid for that content.
    2:37
What I'm interested to see is if this is going to hurt YouTube Red numbers,
    2:40
because people have access to YouTube Red series,
    2:43
but subscribing to YouTube Red separately also makes it so you don't have to watch ads.
    2:46
But also a lot of people use ad-blockers, so they say, ah, I'll just use an ad-blocker,
    2:50
and I'll just get access here. That's a possibility, who knows?
    2:52
But the other scenario is even more intriguing.
    2:54
Let's say you just finished watching an old episode of Atlanta, or maybe it's Season Two.
    2:58
You just watched the new one.
    2:59
When it's completely over, let's say the credits are playing, it does that thing where the window goes small.
    3:03
Around that video they plan to put related YouTube content.
    3:06
So you talk about Atlanta, and then maybe boom,
    3:08
right next to it, there's a big livestream of people having reactions from the episode they just watched.
    3:13
Maybe you just finished watching an episode of West World,
    3:15
and then populated around that video is someone's video of the top ten fan theories.
    3:19
So for the users, there's more content to something they're obviously interested in,
    3:23
and for all of the YouTube creators, all of a sudden you're being introduced to a brand new audience.
    3:27
This could be massive for up-and-coming entertainment YouTubers.
    3:30
And it's here where it seems that YouTube is maximizing what they have access to.
    3:34
They've been talking to the networks for a really long time, they have relationships there.
    3:37
And they also have access to and the ability to push out countless hours of YouTube video.
    3:42
And they can try and merge those markets. This could be huge news for our industry.
    3:47
So with this story, if you wanna see YouTube's official announcement, I'll link to it down below,
    3:50
that should have even more information coming.
    3:52
And also, two, I wanna pass the question off to you,
    3:55
whether you're a cord-cutter, or you're an ancient fossil like myself that still pays for cable TV.
    3:59
Is this interesting to you? If you have cable TV, would you potentially leave cable, or what's keeping you there?
    4:04
And also to those of you who are cord-cutters or never had a cord to cut,
    4:07
what services do you use? What channels are make or break for you?
    4:10
And is this interesting enough for you to try out? I'd love to know your reaction to this,
    4:14
what you're thinking, let me know down below.
    4:15
And from there, I wanna share some stuff I love today in Today in Awesome.
    4:19
And the first bit of awesome are movie clips and trailers.
    4:22
First up, we got the final trailer for Kong: Skull Island- Rise of the King.
    4:25
And I said it when they released the first trailer, I will say it again,
    4:28
I in no way thought I wanted another King Kong movie, but yes.
    4:32
100% yes. This just looks like a good time.
    4:34
Then we had Disney teasing us with a clip of them singing Gaston from the Beauty and the Beast movie.
    4:39
Then we had Ed Sheeran and Jimmy Fallon performing Shape of You using classroom instruments.
    4:43
And finally, I'm excited to announce a little bit of awesome I can finally announce,
    4:46
this is just for my fellow Rooster Teeth lovers out there,
    4:48
I will be on the next season of Million Dollars, But....
    4:50
They made the announcement today. I love those guys, I love the series. It's gonna be a good time.
    4:54
And remember, if you wanna see the full versions of everything I just shared,
    4:56
the secret link of the day, anything at all,
    4:59
links, as always, are in the description down below.
    5:01
And then let's talk about Apple. My favorite company to crap on and then still buy their products.
    5:05
Although, to my defense, I also use Android phones for work, I use non-Apple laptops, I build my own PCs.
    5:12
And really when I think about it, the main reason I've stuck with Apple is I just, I can't-
    5:16
I can't teach my parents how to use any other video app other than FaceTime.
    5:20
That's it, but enough about my stupid choices.
    5:22
Reports have come out today, but it is important to note,
    5:24
Apple has not confirmed these reports, that
    5:34
And on top of all that, the biggest news out of this report to me,
    5:37
is that the iPhone 8 will use USB-C instead of a lightning cable.
    5:41
And that would be amazing, and it's so sad that that news is huge to me.
    5:47
The headline to the story for me is, 'Apple Does Thing That Makes Sense And Isn't A Dick Move, exclamation mark.'
    5:53
Apple's using a port the rest of the industry is also adopting, this is huge news!
    5:58
Apple's known in pretty much every avenue as being the walled-off, we're-better-than-everyone garden.
    6:03
We're talking about a company that looked out and said,
    6:05
okay, we're listening to our customers, we're hearing them. They say they don't like the lightning connector,
    6:10
they love their headphone jack, okay, good idea.
    6:12
Get rid of the headphone jack. If you wanna listen to audio,
    6:15
you gotta use a lightning connector, or this extremely inconvenient and easy-to-lose dongle,
    6:18
or buy some bluetooth headphones, you cheap bastard.
    6:20
And for me, my main takeaway is, I just- I hope at least this part is true.
    6:24
Although, I'm such a cynic, I know that I'm gonna be angry at Apple for one of two reasons.
    6:27
One, this report isn't true, and they still have their stupid, ridiculous system,
    6:30
or two, they introduce this thing that just makes sense, and then they pat themselves on the back 80 times during their announcement,
    6:36
where we're like, 'We're revolutionizing stuff that already happened!'
    6:40
Other phone manufacturers are already doing this. Don't stop peeing on someone and expect them to give you an award.
    6:45
Then, let's talk about the movie Get Out.
    6:46
It's from the mind of Jordan Peele, but no, it is not a comedy. It is a horror movie.
    6:51
    It is also fantastic.
    6:52
If you don't follow me on Twitter you don't know that this happened,
    6:54
but we had a movie night with the DeFranco nation.
    6:56
Saw the movie. I loved it. It made me feel so uneasy,
    6:59
and I didn't know where it was going, then I thought I did, and then I didn't.
    7:02
That's what you want out of that kind of movie.
    7:03
And on top of having the way better than expected $34 million-plus opening weekend,
    7:08
it had a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, until,
    7:11
after 143 fresh ratings, one person didn't like it and knocked it down to a 99%.
    7:17
And that critic was Armond White. Whose name might actually sound familiar
    7:20
if you follow critics because back in 2010,
    7:23
Toy Story 3 had a 100%, but then Armond was like, nah, didn't like it.
    7:27
But you know what? People have different opinions. They have different tastes.
    7:29
But, I read his review, and I don't know if he saw the movie.
    7:33
Because he seems to think that it's liberal propaganda, and once again, that can be a fine opinion.
    7:37
    One quote:
    7:59
What- did you watch the movie?
    8:00
Sorry for the spoiler alert, not the biggest deal in the world, of course we see that character again.
    8:04
That wouldn't make any sense. He's a key plot point.
    8:06
Allow me to say something your mother must have never said.
    8:08
Boy you stupid, stop being stupid!
    8:10
I don't care that you gave rotten ratings to Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, La La Land.
    8:14
That Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Grown Ups seem to be more your jam.
    8:18
And I agree with you defending yourself to people, saying, this is the First Amendment. This is criticism.
    8:22
But to that same point, I have to point out,
    8:25
that you apparently weren't even watching the fuckin' movie!
    8:28
And I'm going to embrace that same first amendment to say,
    8:30
it looks like you're a big fuckin' idiot who already wrote off this movie before you watched it.
    8:35
Because it appears you couldn't do your already ridiculously easy job of watching the movie.
    8:40
Also, connected to this story, uh, something that I found, and really- it bothered me,
    8:45
why I don't personally find the movie to be racist or against white people,
    8:48
oh! Some people loved it for those reasons.
    8:51
Doing a search for "get out white people," wow. Let's look at a few:
    9:03
And it goes on and on and on and on.
    9:05
And I also mention this because there are a lot of people that said, like,
    9:07
watching the movie made them feel uncomfortable, or the movie's racist.
    9:10
But I gotta say, no. I do not believe that the movie was racist. I think that, like with any movie,
    9:15
people's reaction and responses can be racist.
    9:17
Like the people that watch that movie and they were like, 'yeah, fuck white people,'
    9:20
    fuck those people.
    9:21
But also claiming the movie is racist is incredibly short-sighted for reasons I can't mention without spoiling the movie.
    9:26
And I'm feeling like it's really hard to get out of this story, so what I will say is,
    9:29
I personally like the movie. I think in general a lot of people are really stupid. That's the end of this story.
    9:34
And then let's talk about 25-year old Kayla Rae Norton and 26-year old Jose Torres.
    9:39
These two just got slapped down in court.
    9:41
These two were reportedly part of a group of people that showed up to this black child's birthday party,
    9:46
they had been driving around. They were waving Confederate flags, yelling racial slurs,
    9:49
    threatening to kill people.
    9:51
At one point prosecutors saying that Torres aimed a shotgun at people.
    9:54
And after all of this, Norton was sentenced to one count of violating Georgia's Street Gang Act,
    9:59
and one count of making terroristic threats.
    10:00
And she was given 15 years, with six to serve upon her release.
    10:03
And Torres was sentenced on three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,
    10:07
one count of terroristic threats, and one count of violating the Street Gang Act.
    10:10
He was sentenced to twenty years with thirteen to serve in prison.
    10:13
And this story blew up because there were many people who were happy,
    10:15
but there were also people saying, does the sentence fit the crime?
    10:18
And what I want to point out is, in no world am I defending these two pieces of human garbage.
    10:23
And I feel like there's confusion because the headlines have been:
    10:28
The Confederate Flag here isn't really the story. It's part of the story.
    10:31
A group calling themselves Respect the Flag reportedly went on a drunken rampage, according to police.
    10:35
And it seemed that their way of saying 'respect our Confederate flag,'
    10:38
was then to spout racial slurs and threaten black people.
    10:41
That's the problem. There were complaints everywhere they went,
    10:44
and then they got to this child's birthday party,
    10:46
reportedly took out the shotgun, three of them then started passing it around while looking at the party, and said,
    11:02
Yeah, fuck those people. And in fact, if anything, they should be thankful
    11:06
that they did this in Georgia, because Georgia is one of the few states
    11:08
that don't have hate crime laws.
    11:10
If someone did that to my family, I'd want them put away for as long as possible.
    11:13
And that's actually where I'm gonna end today's show.
    11:15
And remember, if you liked this video, you like what I do on this channel,
    11:18
hit that like button! If you're new here, hit that subscribe button.

I love yo faces, and I'll see you tomorrow.
